Kyoto After Hours: Temples Without the Crowds

Our private heritage walk starts at 6:00 AM for a reason. Here's what you'll see, and what you'll feel.

Kyoto's most photographed shrines are transcendent at dawn and unbearable by 10 AM. Fushimi Inari at 6 AM is a private cathedral of vermilion gates with the only sound your own footsteps on stone. The same path at 11 AM is a slow-moving queue with selfie sticks. The difference is four hours and a willingness to set an alarm.

Our private heritage walk starts at the southern base of Fushimi Inari and climbs the full circuit to the summit of Mount Inari — about two hours at an easy pace, with stops at the smaller sub-shrines most day-trippers never reach. By the time you descend, the first tour buses are pulling into the lower car park. You've already seen the best of it.

From there a guide takes you north by taxi to the Higashiyama district. The trick here is to skip Kiyomizu-dera in favour of the smaller temples around it — Yasaka Pagoda's lanes at 8 AM, the moss garden at Anrakuji (open only on certain days; a good guide will know which), and a tea ceremony in a private machiya townhouse rather than one of the tourist-facing tea houses on Sannenzaka.

Lunch is kaiseki at a counter restaurant in Gion — eight or nine seasonal courses, two hours, and a chef who will talk to you about what's on the plate if you let him. Then either Arashiyama in the afternoon (the bamboo grove is fine but the real attraction is Okochi Sanso, the former villa of a silent-film actor with the best garden view in the city) or, if energy is flagging, an onsen in northern Kyoto and an early dinner.

Book the guide privately, not through a group tour aggregator. The good ones — there are perhaps a dozen in Kyoto — have keys, contacts, and relationships that unlock back gates, after-hours visits, and tea ceremonies in homes that aren't on any map. They're not cheap. They're also the entire reason you came.
